What the Work Actually Involves
Estimating here is takeoff and pricing across a wide range of project types — you will see more variety in a month than most in-house estimators see in a year, and you will not be sitting in bid meetings.
A typical week involves multiple projects across different divisions, sectors and regional markets. The work is detailed, deadline-driven, and judged on whether the numbers hold up when a contractor bids against them.
It is also remote and asynchronous by nature. The drawings arrive as files, the questions get asked in writing, and the output is a workbook somebody else has to be able to read without you in the room.
What We Look For
Field or estimating experience in construction. We care more about whether you have done the work than which qualification you hold. Time on site counts for as much as time behind a takeoff platform.
Fluency in a takeoff platform. Bluebeam, PlanSwift, Trimble, STACK or an equivalent. The specific tool matters less than being fast and accurate in one of them.
CSI MasterFormat literacy. You should be able to read a specification and know which division a scope belongs in, and notice when a scope has been assigned to the wrong one.
The instinct to flag rather than assume. The most valuable estimators are the ones who notice the hardware schedule contradicts the door schedule, and say so. Every drawing set has contradictions; the job is to surface them, not smooth them over.
Written clarity. Every estimate we send includes an assumptions schedule that somebody else has to read and act on. If you can write down what you assumed and why, in a way a contractor can use, that is most of the skill.
Certifications — CPE through ASPE, CCP or CEP through AACE — are useful and we will support you pursuing them. They are not a filter.

What does a construction estimator do?
A construction estimator measures quantities from drawings and specifications, applies labor productivity and material pricing to those quantities, and produces the cost figure a contractor bids or budgets from. The role combines drawing literacy, trade knowledge and written clarity about what an estimate assumes.
What qualifications do you need to become a construction estimator?
